Sensor Network Hardware PlatformMica2/Mica2Dot/MicaZ/TelosMica2, Mica2Dot, and MicaZ motes are currently the most advanced versions of the COTS motes. The motes have lower power consumption, radio interface with better noise immunity, better radio range and different power down modes. With an AA battery system Mica2/Mica2Dot lifetime can be up to 17.35 months when the system components are used effectively. However, current trend is moving towards the 802.15.4 radio motes (such as MicaZ, TelosB) instead of Mica2. Two benefits are: smaller antennas, and they are legal to operate in the US and the rest of the world because they run in the 2.4 GHz band. The Mica2's are not exactly "legal" to operate in the US and perhaps other parts of the world. However, with little modifications to Mica2Dot programs, the implementation should run effectively with Micaz. Radio RangeFollowing are some data about radio range of Mica2/Mica2Dot motes. Practical experiments show much difference with crossbow specifications. For Mica2/Mica2Dot, we might assume reliable range to be around 100-150ft radius. According to the specifications provided above, radio range for both Mica2 and Mica2Dot in outdoor environment is: 500-1000 feet radius. [Krasnewski:04]Mica2/Mica2dot: In an open field: 106 feet +/- 2 feet (maximum range). In a small valley (sides 6-7 feet tall): about 116 feet. In an indoor hallway: 200 feet. In the 900 MHz radio: up to 35m (with standard antenna) in an open field (1m height off the ground) and where motes are set on full power. GATEWAYSCrossbow (xbow.com) has developed specilized gateway for sensor networks based on (Mica/Mica2/Micaz) called Stargate ‘Gateway’. Stargate gateway (along with the Mote Interface Boards (MIB)) can provide interfaces among Motes and PCs, PDAs, the WWW, and existing wired/wireless networks and protocols. MOTES / RADIOSThe motes are battery-powered devices that run Crossbow's XMesh self-forming, micro-power, networking stack. In addition, each Mote runs the open-source TinyOS operating system. TinyOS provides low-level event and task management.[www.xbow.com] Application Area For Motes [www.xbow.com]
